A couple of weeks ago, on a Saturday afternoon, Davis and his friends Stone and Griffin, decided it was time to build a go-cart. They gathered a variety of parts, including an old wagon that Kelsey and Davis had as small children. The wagon was plastic, so they decided they could saw that in half and use the back wheels, along with the molded plastic seat to start. That took them awhile! Their next move was to figure out how to attach something to that to extend forward, and find some wheels to use on the front. I had such a good time wandering by periodically to check their progress -- too funny! Ultimately, they lost interest as they were stonewalled about the front wheels. About that time, Richard came home from the golf course. He saw their efforts and promised Davis that he would share "some big brother advice given to him by his older brother Joe" on how to build a go-cart. Soooo, after church on Sunday, they headed to the workshop to get started. The first order of business was to make a materials list, that included 4 wheels. Watching one of Richard's construction projects is always interesting, so I have taken sequential pictures of Richard and Davis working together. You can click on any of the pictures to make it larger so you can see better detail.
Here they are putting together the seat and upright supports. A picture of the front wheel assembly - they used the wagon wheels for that.
More work on the seat and rear wheel assembly - some other wheels Richard had in the shed, I think for a generator that he ended up using other wheels on.
More detail on the wheels assembly. Davis checks it out.
Aaaaaahhhhhh, cushions! Kelsey decides to try it on for size. Oh yeah, the steering mechanism -- isn't that a fancy steering wheel? The day was growing dim as they finished, and they HAD to take it for a spin. A last minute addition, brakes! Check out the paddle assembly on the right rear wheel in the photo at the top. I threatened to use the paddle for other purposes once they were finished with it on the go-cart! LOL This go-cart has provided HOURS of fun for Davis and Kelsey and their friends.
Wow! Davis I'm impressed!!!
